Fixed-Gear Bike

Single-speed bikes where the rear cog is fixed to the hub, so the pedals turn whenever the rear wheel turns. Riders can slow down by resisting the pedals.

Pros & Cons

The main trade-offs of the Fixed-Gear Bike design.

Advantages

  • Very simple, with few parts to maintain
  • Light and efficient on flat ground
  • Direct drive gives a strong feel for the bike's speed

Disadvantages

  • No coasting: the pedals keep turning while the bike moves
  • A single gear makes hills difficult
  • Takes practice to ride and stop confidently
